The American Institute of Architects is an organization for professional architects. Founded in New York in 1857 with 13 architects, the mission of the organization is to elevate the profession’s standing and promote its members scientific and practical perfection. From its headquarters in Washington, D.C. the AIA provides government advocacy, community redevelopment, education and public outreach in order to support the profession as well as improve its public image. Working with other design and construction team members, the AIA helps to coordinate the building industry.


Before the founding of the AIA, the United States had no schools of architecture and there were no architectural licensing laws. That meant anyone could say they were an architect. Initially called the New York Society of Architects, the name later became the American Institute of Architects. In the 1860s architects from cities throughout the United States began asking to join. There were AIA chapters in Washington, D.C., Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Chicago, San Francisco, Cincinnati, Rhode Island, St. Louis, Indianapolis and Albany by the 1880s. The AIA had over 300 chapters as of 2008.


Robert Ivy, FAIA is the AIA’s current CEO and executive vice president. Ivy was named ‘Master Architect’ by the prestigious national architecture fraternity Alpha Rho Chi. In the 100-year history of the fraternity, only 7 architects have received this honor. The signature accomplishments of Robert Ivy as CEO of AIA includes streamlining the governance of the AIA to improve its decision-making, launching a public awareness campaign that has won awards and creating a digital-first technology infrastructure. His is currently helping architects address pressing issues like public health, climate change and sustainability.


Prior to taking a leadership position with the AIA, Robert Ivy was Architectural Record’s editor-in-chief. During his time there, he helped the publication become the most popular architectural journal worldwide. With IVY editing the magazine, it won a whole host of awards and accolades for its writing, photographs, layouts and the meaningful topics it covered. Robert Ivy also worked as a critic for several publications all across the country. He also held a leadership position at Dean/Dale, Dean & Ivy. Robert Ivy won the 2009 Crain Award, the highest recognition the American Business Media gives to an individual. In 1998, he was given the business excellence award by McGraw-Hill and he has won many other publishing industry awards and distinctions. A Design Futures Council Senior Fellow, Robert Ivy wrote what experts consider the definitive biography of famed architect Fay Jones. Ivy’s award-winning book is called ‘Fay Jones: Architect’. As Luiz Carlos Trabuco Leaves CEO Post, Who Will Replace Him?

The departure of long-time chairman of Grupo Bradesco, Lazaro Brandao, has set of a cascade of vacancies within the bank. Brandao has already named Luiz Carlos Trabuco, the firm’s current CEO, as his successor in the position of chairman. That leaves the post of CEO up for grabs, as Trabuco has ensured stakeholders that he will not permanently occupy both the spots of CEO and chairman.

Visionary in chief Brandao will leave, can anyone take his place?

Even as Brandao, a 75-year employee of Bradesco, bows out for the last time, he leaves serious questions in his wake. The 91 year old banker, who has served in various top executive roles with the bank since 1981, is leaving shoes that some say are simply too large to be adequately filled. It is for this reason that, even as the current chairman approached his 92nd year, there are many shareholders who are being made extremely nervous by his departure.

Brandao himself has been with the bank since 1943. In that year, the first full year the bank was in operation, a 16 year old Brandao was hired on as a bank teller at the firm’s only branch, in the city of Marilia. Over the next 75 years, he rose quickly through the ranks, eventually reaching the executive suite in the early 80s. In 1990, Brandao also took on the role of chairman of the board. He was concurrently both the chairman and CEO of the firm from 1990 to 1999, the only time in the company’s history in which both positions have been held by the same man.

But Brandao really started earning his reputation from the early 90s on. It was over this period that he oversaw a more than 300-fold rise in the stock price, one of the largest in recent Brazilian business history. He also was instrumental in the early adoption of internet banking platforms and the rapid growth that the bank underwent throughout the 90s and 2000s.

For someone so inextricably linked to the bank’s most astonishing successes, it’s no wonder that so many are feeling uncertainty as the venerable banker finally retires for good.

Who will replace Trabuco?

Trabuco himself has a resume that is nearly as impressive of that of his boss. First coming to work for the company in 1969, at the age of just 18, Trabuco, like Brandao, is a lifelong Bradesco employee. But Trabuco had the misfortune of overseeing a time of considerable tumult in the company’s history.

Throughout the 2010s, Trabuco was at the helm, as the stock price slid more than 80 percent from its 2009 highs. This downward spiral was only recovered from at the last minute, when, in 2015, Trabuco was able to pull off the acquisition of the century. In a $5.2 billion, all cash deal, he was able to acquire HSBC Brazil, in its entirety. The transaction was the largest in Brazilian history and instantly rocketed Bradesco back to the top spot in the Brazilian banking industry across a wide variety of measures.

But Trabuco’s early teething problems as CEO have left a bitter taste in the mouths of some shareholders, who see him as a potentially risky candidate for the position of chairman.

What’s more, there is great uncertainty as to who will replace Trabuco in the role of CEO. Many have named Mauricio Minas, the 57-year-old chief information technology officer as the most likely candidate to replace Trabuco.

Whoever ultimately prevails as CEO, it is likely that the same strategy and vision that has proved so lucrative for the bank over its 75 year history will remain the centerpiece of its vision for the near term future.

Digital Footprint Leads To Arrest At Quincy Circle In New Brunswick, NJ

The Quincy is an area of housing complexes that have a crime problem. It is located in New Brunswick, N.J. near Raritan River and Liberty Street. These apartment buildings are in a low-income area that has a recent history of robberies, shootings, and gang related activity.


Shootings recorded by police include Nov 30, 2012, when a local pizza man was delivering an order to The Quincy. He arrived at the Northern building of the Quincy Circle Complex but none of the residents would claim to have ordered the pizza. Upon returning to his car, he was confronted by three armed men. The pizza man was forced to give the armed men his wallet, money, the pizza, and was then shot while the men were driving away in a minivan. The investigation took a turn when Det. Ron Seaman, working with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, traced cell phone records to that area around the time of the robbery and shooting. They were able to apprehend Parysh Wood, 21, as the leader of the set-up and robbery. The investigation took over four months before Woods was charged with the crime of robbery.


Another shooting took place at the New Brunswick Apartments on Oct 7, 2015, that may have been gang related. Four shootings occurred that left one person with minor injuries. The injured person was driven to a local hospital by an unknown driver that, police believe, may have been the suspect. Upon later examination of the scene, more bullets were found and a further investigation ensued.


Police and residents of the Quincy Complex are concerned about the amount of crime that is committed in that area. Gangs and their related violence make it difficult for the residents to feel safe in their neighborhood. What has helped police solve crimes is being able to track digital devices, used by perpetrators, to place the suspect near or at the scene of the crime, while the act is being committed. The Quincy Circle incidents of crime represent a large cost to local taxpayers and strain local crime fighting resources until a solution is found.
